For a large enough consumer, becoming your own AEMO market participant can beat holding a retail contract. We help you get there and stay there.

For a large enough consumer, becoming your own AEMO market participant can beat holding a retail contract. We help you get there and stay there.

What it is

A sophisticated, large consumer can supply itself directly from the Wholesale Electricity Market rather than through a retailer. That means registering in your own right - as your own AEMO Market Participant - with AEMO itself, with Western Power for network access, with the Clean Energy Regulator, and with Austraclear for settlement, and lodging the security deposits those registrations require. No retail licence is needed, because you become your own AEMO Market Participant and take on full pass-through exposure to wholesale costs directly.

What registering involves

  • AEMO - Registration as a Market Participant in the WEM in your own right
  • Western Power - Network access arrangements for the connection points you supply
  • Clean Energy Regulator - Registration and ongoing lodgement obligations
  • Austraclear - The settlement system market payments run through

Once you are registered, the exposure a retailer currently absorbs on your behalf becomes yours directly: full pass-through of wholesale energy costs, the obligations that come with being a market participant, and the security deposits those obligations carry. We advise on setting the arrangement up, on procurement strategy once you are in the market, and on running the position day to day to help keep costs down - but the registrations, the deposits and the obligations sit with you, not with us.

What you get

  • Guidance on registering directly with AEMO, Western Power, the Clean Energy Regulator and Austraclear
  • A plain read on the obligations, risks and security deposits involved, before you commit
  • Procurement strategy advice for buying directly from the wholesale market
  • Ongoing operational advice to manage costs once you're live

Who it's for

Large, sophisticated electricity consumers assessing whether self-retailing is worth the obligations it brings - businesses with the load, the risk appetite and the internal capability to sit closer to the market than a standard retail contract allows.

This is a commitment, not a shortcut. Becoming your own market participant means taking on registration obligations, security deposits and direct exposure to wholesale price risk that a retail contract currently carries for you. We help you weigh that up honestly before you commit, and we help you run it once you have - but the obligations, and the decision to take them on, are yours.

Buying through a retailer is one relationship between you and the wholesale market. Direct participation replaces it with one you hold yourself, backed by registrations - and the obligations and deposits that come with them - across AEMO, Western Power, the Clean Energy Regulator and Austraclear.
